Scars and Skin Types

So the question is, how do we make sure that people with tan skin get better scars? So there’s a classification system that we use called the Fitzpatrick System and if you’ve got slightly darker skin or olive skin, say you might come from an Asian background or a Mediterranean background, we would say that would make you a three or a category four. And in those situations we need to be mindful that you don’t get pigmented scars or hypertrophic scars. But a lot of it comes down to hiding your scars in creases. So that’s the way how most plastic surgeons try to make sure you get a great scar. It’s hiding it in a good crease as well as excellent surgical technique, and then finally, it’s good post-operative surgical care. So that means using things such as massage, as well as silicon ointments and tapes, sometimes laser and very rarely things like steroid injections. So a combination of all those things means that our scars, particularly with breast augmentation are almost invisible over time and that’s because we’ve used all those techniques.
